What Exactly is Addiction?

What Exactly Is

Addiction?

Drug addiction, or substance use disorder, develops when a person’s drug use is compulsive, despite the negative issues associated with frequent use like relationship problems, health issues, disability, and a failure to fulfill obligations at work or school. Categorized as a chronic brain disease, drug addiction causes changes to a person’s brain chemistry, particularly the brain’s reward system. As the brain adapts to the drugs by developing a tolerance, people often feel inclined to take more of the drug to regain the same high they felt before.

What Causes Drug Addiction?

Many people wonder how drug addiction occurs or why some people become easily addicted to drugs while others don’t. There are various factors that can increase a person’s risk for addiction, and the more factors that apply to a person, the more likely it is that they will develop an addiction if they use drugs.

Some common risk factors associated with drug addiction include:

  • Family history: Genetics are known to account for a person’s risk of addiction. If your family has a history of drug or alcohol addiction or a history of mental illness, you’re at a higher risk of developing an addiction.
  • Childhood abuse: Children who experience physical, emotional, or sexual abuse are more likely to develop drug addictions when they get older. Children who weren’t abused but have been neglected by family members may also develop drug problems.
  • Early exposure: When people are exposed to or try drugs at a young age, they’re more likely to develop an addiction as they head into adulthood. Young people often experiment with drugs in high school or college, but that experimentation can quickly lead to addiction.

Our Approach to Drug Addiction Rehab

At Cedar Oaks Wellness Center, we acknowledge and fully understand that everyone’s experience with drug addiction is different. Instead of using cookie-cutter treatment strategies, we customize our treatment programs to each client’s individual needs.

Depending on the nature and severity of your addiction, we may begin with a medically-supervised drug detox program in Ohio where we can monitor your body’s response as the substance leaves your system. This may include medication-assisted treatment to help keep you as comfortable as possible while your body adjusts.

Once you have overcome the initial withdrawal, the next phase of treatment will involve a combination of psychiatric, behavioral, and holistic therapies designed to strengthen both your mind and body during recovery. We offer a wide range of therapies and healthy activities at our state-of-the-art campus, including:

Recovery at Our Addiction Treatment Center in Ohio.

It’s important to know that there isn’t one fix-all that will cure you or your loved one of drug addiction. Recovery is a long process that is full of obstacles, even when someone has completed treatment at a rehabilitation center. Before someone is ready to get treated for their addiction, they must first acknowledge they have a problem and realize the ways in which their actions have harmed their loved ones and themselves. During this acknowledgment and awareness, there is a gradual acceptance of the addiction, but the person has not yet committed to quitting.

If you’re ready to make a change in your life, our inpatient drug rehab in Ohio is ready to help. We can walk you through the recovery process, learn more about your needs, and work closely together to create a plan to facilitate your journey.

The Stages of Addiction Recovery Include:
1.
Recovery Exploration

Once someone has realized their addiction is a problem, they may attempt to quit using drugs on their own, only to relapse. When this occurs, the person may finally admit that they need professional help and reach out to a friend or an Ohio addiction treatment program.

2.
Begin Recovery

The individual is now undergoing professional treatment for their addiction, which can include attending therapy and learning healthy coping skills and habits.

3.
Aftercare

Many people unfamiliar with the recovery process assume that their addiction is over for good once they’ve completed treatment, but recovery requires ongoing care. Treatment centers may connect clients with support groups and suggest they continue going to therapy to work on their skills and continue committing to a sober lifestyle.
