The Effects of

Anxiety

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 16% of adult Americans experience anxiety, with about 3% of Americans suffering from severe anxiety. For many, anxiety is not constant. Instead, it comes and goes, often without warning or a trigger, which makes it difficult to prepare for.

What is Anxiety?

Anxiety – more formerly called generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) – is a mental health difficulty that causes the individual to feel unsafe or uneasy frequently or at all times.

The symptoms of anxiety can vary but will usually include:

  • Restlessness
  • Constant fatigue
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Insomnia
  • Paranoia
  • Muscle aches
  • Mood swings
  • Constant worry with no clear source

Some people suffer from anxiety or panic attacks, too, which is a sudden onset of severe anxiety symptoms, including shortness of breath. Although panic attacks are not considered dangerous, people with other respiratory difficulties might require medical attention for a severe panic attack.

What Causes Anxiety?

Like many mental health difficulties like depression, anxiety often does not have an obvious cause. The vagueness of its source can make it difficult to address.

People can be at a higher risk of anxiety if they have problems with stressors, such as:

  • Work pressures
  • Family expectations
  • Relationships
  • Financial problems

Overall, the common medical consensus is that GAD is most often caused or worsened by stress. Unfortunately, anxiety cannot be “cured” simply by removing sources of stress like quitting a stressful job. GAD is a health condition that requires specialized care.
