What to Know About United Healthcare
United Healthcare is also known as the UnitedHealth Group or UHC. It’s made up of two companies—UnitedHealthcare and Optum. Between these two companies, healthcare plans are available in every state and worldwide. United Healthcare provides coverage for tens of millions of Americans, while Optum integrates technology health services.
The specific plans that are available through UHC depend on the state and the tier of coverage that you choose as a policyholder but generally fall into one of three categories:
- UnitedHealthcare Choice is a plan with in-network coverage with nearly 900,000 providers nationwide. If you go out-of-network, however, there is no coverage.
- UnitedHealthcare Choice Plus includes cost savings if you stay in-network, and while there may be some coverage for an out-of-network provider, it will be less.
- UnitedHealthcare Options PPO includes savings on out-of-pocket costs if you get treatment with a member of the preferred provider network.
In-Network vs. Out-of-Network Providers

What Types of Treatment Will United Healthcare Cover?

- Inpatient rehab: A residential program is inpatient, meaning you live onsite during your treatment for a period of time. Inpatient programs are a good starting point for most people struggling with addiction because the environment is secure, stable, and focused. You’re away from triggers or things that could derail your recovery in the earliest days of your treatment process.
- Partial hospitalization: Also known as a PHP or day program, during partial hospitalization, you have access to the full-day programming of inpatient rehab, but you return home at night and on the weekends.
- Medication-assisted treatment: MAT includes using FDA-approved medicines to help your recovery. These medicines aren’t cures for addiction but are used with behavioral treatments and mental health care.
- Dual diagnosis: When someone’s struggling with addiction, there’s a high likelihood they also have a mental health disorder, known as co-occurring disorders. Treating both at the same time is important for your recovery.
