Healing doesn't only happen in a therapy room. At Cedar Oaks, we help individuals reconnect with themselves through hands-on, nature-based experiences — including the extraordinary power of animal connection.
What Is Experiential Therapy?
Traditional talk therapy is powerful — but for many people, emotions live in the body long before they can be put into words. Experiential therapy offers a different path into healing: one that engages the mind and body together, in the present moment.
At Cedar Oaks Wellness Center near Cincinnati, Ohio, experiential therapy is woven into a full, individualized treatment plan. Through guided activities in nature, animal-assisted visits, and movement-based practices, clients access layers of healing that conversation alone often cannot reach.
This approach is especially powerful for those who feel stuck, disconnected, or struggle to express what they're carrying — and it's become a cornerstone of our holistic addiction treatment program.
"The most important things are often the hardest to say. Experiential therapy helps you feel them first."
"Recovery should feel real, engaging, and deeply connected to life — not confined to a clinical setting."Cedar Oaks Wellness Center · Oregonia, Ohio
Animal-Assisted Therapy
Animal-assisted experiences are a meaningful part of our experiential programming at Cedar Oaks. Scheduled therapeutic animal visits create a uniquely calming, non-judgmental space — one that opens the door to emotional healing in ways that clinical settings often cannot.
Interacting with animals is clinically shown to reduce cortisol — the stress hormone — and increase oxytocin, the bonding hormone. Animals are non-judgmental and respond to your presence in the moment, creating an environment where emotional openness feels natural and safe.
Animal-assisted therapy is especially powerful for individuals working through trauma, anxiety, depression, or co-occurring disorders. For those who find verbal expression difficult, an animal visit can be the first time they feel truly relaxed and present since entering treatment.
Our Experiential Programs
Each program is guided by trained professionals and integrated into your personalized care plan at our Cincinnati-area treatment center.
Cedar Oaks incorporates animal-assisted experiences as a meaningful part of our experiential programming. These scheduled visits offer something clinical environments often can't: an immediate, wordless sense of calm and safety.
Animals have no agenda. They respond to how you show up in the moment — making interaction with them an unexpectedly powerful mirror for self-awareness and emotional regulation.
For many clients, their first animal-assisted session is a turning point in treatment — a moment where they finally feel present enough to begin healing.

Cedar Oaks sits on 120 acres of forest and open space near Cincinnati, Ohio — a setting that is itself therapeutic. Our nature-based programming uses the outdoor environment as an active part of healing, not just a backdrop.
Research consistently shows that time in nature reduces anxiety, lowers blood pressure, and improves mood and cognitive function — all critical for individuals in recovery.
Outdoor activities, mindfulness walks, and grounding practices in natural settings help clients reconnect with the present moment, one of the most protective factors against relapse.

The body holds what the mind tries to forget. Movement-based therapy and mindfulness practices help individuals reconnect with physical sensation, release stored tension, and build a more grounded sense of self.
For many people in recovery, the body has been a source of distress or disconnection for years. Gentle, guided movement rebuilds that relationship — safely and at your own pace.
These skills — body awareness, breath, presence — become daily practices that support recovery long after treatment ends at our Cincinnati-area center.

Clinical Benefits
Hands-on experiences in nature and with animals naturally calm the nervous system, reducing cortisol and building a greater capacity for rest and emotional regulation.
By practicing presence and awareness in real-time experiences, clients develop stronger emotional regulation skills that transfer directly into everyday life and recovery.
Successfully navigating new experiences — with animals, in nature, or through movement — builds genuine self-efficacy and confidence that carry forward through recovery.
Experiential therapy develops attunement, patience, and communication — foundational skills for rebuilding relationships affected by addiction.
Grounding in the present is one of the most protective factors against relapse — and one of the hardest to build through conversation alone. Experiential therapy makes it tangible.
Paired with CBT, DBT, individual and group therapy, experiential therapy ensures recovery addresses the whole person — not just the addiction.
Is This Right for You?
Our clinical team will help you determine how experiential therapy fits into your personalized treatment plan. There's no pressure — just a conversation about what might help most.
No prior experience with animals, nature, or mindfulness is needed. Just a willingness to try something new.
