What is Medication-Assisted Treatment?

What Exactly Is

MAT?

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) involves the use of medications, as well as behavioral therapies, to treat people suffering from substance use disorder. With the ultimate goal of recovery, MAT can decrease the risk of overdose. Though MAT can be applied to a variety of addictions, it’s primarily used to treat addiction to opioids, including heroin and other pain relievers that contain opiates.

The medications administered are all approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and have been shown to:

Increase retention in treatment programs Improve client survival
Increase ability to gain and maintain employment
Decrease opiate use and other criminal activity

By reducing the possibility of a relapse, MAT can also decrease a person’s risk of contracting HIV and hepatitis C, which many people with heroin addictions can contract through using unsterilized needles.

Understand What You Need

MAT Medications

FDA-approved MAT medications, when applied to opioid addictions, work to block the euphoric effects that opioids produce, as well as relieve drug cravings and balance out bodily functions. The medications are all evidence-based and, despite what some rumors suggest, MAT does not involve substituting one drug for another.

Common MAT medications include:

  • Alcohol use disorder medications: Alcoholism can be treated with acamprosate, disulfiram, and naltrexone. Disulfiram, for example, helps clients gradually decrease alcohol use by creating unpleasant side effects when they drink, such as nausea, headaches, and chest pains. Naltrexone blocks the euphoria a person feels when they’re intoxicated and is also used to treat opioid addiction.
  • Opioid dependency medications: Short-acting opioid addictions, such as heroin, codeine, and morphine, as well as semi-synthetic opioid addictions like hydrocodone and oxycodone can be treated with buprenorphine, and naltrexone. These medications can be used over time and last for years.
  • Opioid overdose prevention medication: Individuals who have experienced overdose can be treated with naloxone. Naloxone works as an opioid antagonist by reversing the effects of opioids, but is a temporary treatment that is usually used in emergency situations.

Myths & Facts About MAT

What Are Some
MAT Myths?

Though there exists much evidence today that medication-assisted treatment is effective in treating addiction and preventing overdose and relapse, there are still some myths surrounding the treatment that may make people wary of considering it as an option.

Our team is more than happy to inform you about MAT benefits and shut down any rumors you may have heard. At our Ohio inpatient drug rehab, our MAT treatment programs have successfully helped countless clients.

Some myths include:

  • MAT Trades One Addiction for Another: While it is true that some MAT medications, can be addictive, when administered by a medical professional the risk of addiction is low. Addiction professionals are trained and aware of how to properly administer and maintain medication in a way that stabilizes clients. Clients who have gone through our MAT programs have reported feeling healthier and more prepared to continue their journey toward recovery.
  • MAT Slows or Disrupts Recovery: Some people say that MAT interrupts the recovery process, but it is, in fact, an important step in recovery and may even be able to help clients manage their recovery more efficiently.
  • MAT is a Temporary Fix: MAT isn’t temporary, but rather, a lifelong process. Approved treatments can last for years and be used throughout a recovering person’s life. There are no quick fixes involved.
