Deciding it’s time to seek help for an addiction is already challenging enough; the last thing you need is to fret over how you’ll pay for it. It’s no secret that addiction care can be costly, especially for those who need long-term support. Luckily, most insurance providers can help you offset those costs. But does insurance pay for drug rehab in all cases, and if so, how much does insurance pay for drug rehab? The answer can vary from person to person. No matter what, though, there are likely financing options you can use to make the cost of care manageable.
Cedar Oaks Wellness is a mental health and addiction treatment facility offering a full continuum of care. We work with major insurance providers to help clients navigate their financial needs successfully. We’re here to help you discover how to make care affordable so you can focus on what matters most: healing.
We have good news: most health insurance plans do cover the cost of rehab services for substance use and mental health disorders. However, your specific plan will determine how much of your substance abuse treatment is covered. Always check in with your insurance provider to gain insight into what your plan covers – and what it doesn’t.
In most cases, 50% or more of your treatment costs can be covered by insurance. Although specifics will vary between plans, you can generally expect a wide range of programs to be covered, including:

Unfortunately, there is no one answer to this question. It all depends on your insurance plan. For most clients, insurance should cover most costs, but this may vary based on the kind of program you’re pursuing. It helps to understand which tier your insurance plan falls into – these tiers, as listed below, determine how much of the cost of care you’ll pay out-of-pocket. But they also influence how high your deductibles and monthly payments will be.
Gold – These plans come with lower monthly payments and out-of-pocket costs but a higher deductible. Gold plans pay for around 80% of covered rehab expenses.
Silver – These plans are typically seen as a middle ground. They offer moderate monthly payments, out-of-pocket costs, and deductibles. Silver plans pay for around 70% of rehab expenses.
Bronze – These plans have the lowest monthly rates but the highest out-of-pocket costs and deductibles. Bronze plans also come with the lowest level of coverage, paying for around 60% of treatment expenses.

Providers that are “in-network” have been added to an insurance company’s list of partner facilities. Think of being in-network as staying on your own team. It’s certainly possible to find and pursue treatment options that aren’t in-network, but those that are usually cost far less and come with fewer headaches.
Insurance providers will cover a larger portion of expenses for in-network care and may cover a greater number of sessions or services. Likewise, providers employ some level of vetting when selecting approved facilities, which means you can trust that in-network options are held to high standards. In-network care is easier, means less paperwork, and won’t surprise you with many unexpected costs.
Sometimes, it’s not possible to find the services or treatments you want in an in-network facility. Or, you may not have insurance that covers the treatment you need. Regardless of why you can’t count on insurance to cover rehab costs, there are some other options you can try out.

Whether insurance will pay for your drug rehab services ultimately depends on the plan you have and the care you seek. Fortunately, most insurance providers will cover mental health disorders, including substance use disorders. The treatment you need to heal and recover is considered a medical necessity, not a luxury. You deserve a chance to focus on your needs and build the confidence to help you thrive.
